Who Is Grayson Mitchell, Inc.?
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. is a flatbed carrier with 48
state common and contract authority. We have over
320 company power units in our fleet and
over 450 trailers. We are constantly growing to meet our customers' demands. Our fleet consists of well-maintained, late-model conventionals with air-ride and state-of-the-art satellite communications. All company units are painted alike, and our drivers wear uniforms to portray a more professional image.
Our History
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. was started in 1976 by H. Grayson Mitchell, Jr. Grayson started as a truck driver when he was 18 years
of age. Several years passed and he
became a dispatcher and then became general manager with another trucking company. With time Grayson began to purchase trucks of his own and leased them
back to the company he was managing. Later he made the decision to
make a go on his own with 24 trucks. The company has grown from a small flatbed carrier to Virginia's largest home-based flatbed carrier. With a fleet of
over 320 units and growing interest by drivers, our prospects for
the future are very promising.
The management team of Grayson Mitchell,
Inc. is made up of former truck drivers and
people who have many years of experience in
the industry. Like Grayson, they
realize the difficulties that our nation's
drivers face on a daily basis and they are
committed to showing our drivers respect and
a pay package that is above industry
standards.
We have numerous operations under the same
roof. The local operation generally
operates within 200 miles of the terminal
that he or she may be assigned to and are
home every night.
The regional operation will operate from New
Jersey or Pennsylvania to Florida and are
home every weekend and some nights during
the week depending of where the driver
lives.
The system drivers can generally go most
anywhere, with the greatest concentration
east of the Mississippi river. All
system drivers are home 98% of the weekends
and, depending on where the driver lives,
may get by home some during the week.
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. also has dedicated
groups throughout the entire regions they
serve.
Depending on what the driver selects,
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. can easily match the
job to the individual driver's preference.
We run our drivers primarily along the eastern U.S. with our "System Drivers" running the eastern half of the United States. We have a growing local business in the Virginia area, as well as a few dedicated positions. Our log truck business remains small, as many times these drivers have opted to move into regional and over-the-road positions.
We hire owner/operators to help with our customers' requests for more trucks to move their freight. Recently we have begun operations that help a driver make a career change to become an owner/operator through our lease purchase program. These drivers, as well as our company drivers, enjoy our "Home on Weekends."
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. began to expand in 1997 with our second terminal located in Dillon, South Carolina.
In 2002 we opened a terminal in Palatka,
Florida and are presently running
approximately 72 trucks out of that
terminal.
Our drivers, because they are home on
weekends, as well as occasionally during the
week, have an opportunity to enjoy life
beyond trucking. They have hobbies and
enjoy quality time with their families.
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. drivers have
benefited from the new hours of service
rules. With 34 hour restart and being
at home on the weekends, they are much more
productive during the work week and
subsequently, they do not have to camp out
at truck stops during the weekends in order
to restart the log book.
Company Philosophy
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. is dedicated and focused on being the best flatbed carrier on the East Coast of the United States.
This includes how we are seen by our truck drivers, other drivers in the industry, our customers, and the general motoring public with whom we share the road.
We strive to be a "Driver Friendly Company" and are constantly making changes to lead the way to meeting our drivers' needs. This is why we continue to get our drivers home on weekends!
We honestly believe that there is very little gained by having a driver sitting in a truck stop where he will do nothing to his benefit. Often the load cannot be delivered, because the consignee employees are home. With many other trucking companies, the truck driver sits with nothing to do but "spend his hard-earned money" at the truck stop all weekend long.
Our drivers, because they are home on weekends, as well as occasionally during the week, have an opportunity to enjoy a life beyond trucking; they have hobbies and enjoy time with their families. We, as a company, also benefit from this. We feel a driver who each week has time to really relax and know what is going on with his family first-hand, concentrates on his job and is a safer and more productive driver.
In any trucking company, your reputation with the shippers and consignees is crucial. We know our drivers are our most visible representatives, as well as the "driving force" that accomplishes the tasks to "deliver on time, undamaged freight, safely, and with pride." It takes drivers who are dedicated professionals, who are satisfied and comfortable with their employer, and who believe in safety to provide the first-class service that Grayson Mitchell Inc. prides itself on.
We have earned and maintained a great reputation with our customers, mainly because we have a very content "Driver Force." These drivers provide a service to our customers that is second to none. We provide our drivers with state-of-the-art equipment, such as modern computer-controlled engines, all air-ride suspensions for our trailers and trucks, and air-ride cabs in many cases. Communication with our office and dispatchers is done through QualComm satellite tracking and communications system. This system also allows us to quickly route them or send specific door-to-door directions. Our drivers are never but a moment away from contact with us. Our drivers are backed and supported by an experienced staff and management team, many of whom have been drivers in the past and still occasionally take to the road.
We are constantly working on our safety record, as well as safety issues, and we are dedicated to the proposition that "safety is always first." Because we believe that educated drivers are safer drivers, we have participated in the "NO ZONE" presentation with local high schools. We are currently expanding a safety program that is guided by our drivers, whom we feel "know best the problems frequently faced by today's truckers."
Whether you are a shipper looking for first-class, dependable service to your customers, or a driver exploring a possible new employer, you will find that Grayson Mitchell, Inc. is a first-class flatbed carrier, dedicated to its employees and customers alike.
